Pakistan is largely arid and semi-arid, receiving less than 250 mm annual rainfall, with the driest regions receiving less than 125 mm of rain annually. It has a diverse landscape, with high mountain systems, fragile watershed areas, alluvial plains, coastal mangroves, and dune deserts. Forests cover approximately is 4.58 million ha (5.7 percent) in Pakistan. Of these, 0.132 million ha (less than 3 percent) are coastal mangrove forests. Pakistan is divided into 18 habitat types, among them mangrove forests, which occur mainly in the Indus Delta and in a few patches westward along the Balochistan Coast.
Pakistan has rich traditional knowledge and wisdom in the conservation of nature and natural resources. Religious beliefs, culture and folklore have together treated nature and environment with sanctity. As a chairman of KPT, I would like to say that we have traveled a long way on the path of progress and industrialisation in order to achieve better quality of life. We have accelerated the process of development without considering the adverse impact on nature and environment. The development without care for environment has posed threats to the very existence of life itself.
Now the realisation that mere progress and economic development cannot solve all our problems has increased. Development and environment should go hand in hand. Karachi: Human trafficking of young girls has been revealed in Karachi, the port city of Pakistan, who are being sent to a Middle Eastern country for prostitution and for filming porn movies.
“An organized network of girls trafficking is running racket of sending girls from poor families of the city in the name of providing ‘respectable’ job to them,” disclosed a local daily.
When these girls return to Karachi they are further blackmailed to remain a toy in hands of these human traffickers.
“The network, also include women members to catch girls, has so far sent dozens of young girls to different states of United Arab Emirates,” the daily quoted official sources as saying.
Sources further disclosed that the network is active in various parts of Karachi including Gulshen Iqbal, Abul Hasan Asfahani Road and Gulistan e Jauhar.
“Besides forcing innocent girls to fulfill illicit demands of ‘the customers’, this network also forge information to prepare fake immigration documents for the girls,” they added.
“This is because if any girl is deported from UAE then law enforcers could not be able to find the accurate data of the trapped girl.”
The presence of this network was disclosed 15 days ago when a 19-year old Shahzia managed to save her life and reached Karachi after four years. Afterwards, girl went to an Non Governmental Agency for protection and told her suffering.
The office-bearers of the NGO then informed Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). On application of the girl, the officials of FIA Anti-Human Trafficking circle eventually arrested a member of the network and an FIR was lodged on Monday 10 April. The accused is now on a 17-day remand as per orders of a local court.
“Efforts were being put up to arrest the remaining members of the group on basis of information provided by the arrested culprit,” the sources noted.
“Accused Abdul Qayyum is a resident of Abul Hasan Asfahani, Karachi.”
After court hearing, Shahzia, present with NGO office-bearers, told that she was a resident of Abul Hasan Asfahani.
“I belonged to a poor family and most of the time my father was unable to earn livelihood for the family owing to his illness.”
“I was fond of studies but couldn’t complete my study due to financial woes of the family.”
Shazia went on to say, “A woman Fatima, lived in my neighborhood, used to visit our home. She persuaded my mother by telling her stories of many girls working in UAE and sending large amount of money to their homes.”
“In UAE, Veil is compulsory for women and girls are usually work as maid or factory worker in a protective environment,” Fatima usually started her brief with this sentence.
After being trapped by bright and prosperous future, Shazia’s family decided to send her to Dubai where she was forcibly sold to many Arabs and Pakistanis.
Official sources in FIA said that they had traced solid evidences against this human trafficking network in addition to information provided by the culprit Abdul Qayyum. However, further investigation is underway.
