He is a self-made man, albeit he attributes his successful making up to his parents’ blessings and efforts which in fact makes him more-than-successful. His current placement is at Pearl Continental Lahore as General Manager, which has a tale to tell about his long association with the Hotel Management business. During his management degree in Germany, he felt no shame in doing menial jobs to meet both ends meet, so he has earned his career – in the very true sense of the word.
‘Language barrier in Germany was tough. When I did not know German, I did dish washing in the evenings and attended school in the mornings – until I learned enough German language which could land me at a better occupation.’ (Irshad B Anjum)
His inspirations are all those who rose to the giddy heights of glory out of sheer hard work, and loads & loads of it.
Family, Education and Early life:
Irshad B Anjum worked literally day in and day out to stand tall as the successful son of his father: Muhammad Latif Ullah, who worked in Pakistan Railways for quite some long.
Owing to his father’s occupation, he travelled to places by train during postings. He attended a school at Malakwal for his primary education. He did his Matric from ‘Model High School Lala Musa’. His intermediate is from Sir Syed College Gujrat; where he found a great teacher, Professor Waseem, who taught him English and the teacher-student relationship remains till todate. Irshad eventually graduated from Diyal Singh College, Lahore, completing his Bachelors of Arts.
As a kid he used to cycle around a lot, and the great bowler inside him makes him a cricketer; a sport he plays even today. He liked Sarfraz Nawaz as a bowler then.
After BA, he appeared for an interview to join the Inter-Continental then (Pearl Continental now) as a trainee in 1972; and after that the story of relentless hard work starts. It took him 14 years to become the holder of the office in which he appeared for an interview as a young graduate, but he made it and he made it good.
Professional brief:
Irshad Anjum started work as a young trainee at the Inter-continental Hotel. As a young ambitious person he moved to Sharjah in 1974 and worked there in Carlton Hotel for one year to get his first international exposure. From thereon, there was no looking back. He moved to Heidelberg, Germany joined FACH Hotel School in Germany, he completed the three year management course. Armed with the diploma in hospitality, he decided to enhance his professional degree with American experience. Thus, he enrolled at Holiday Inn University, Memphis, Tennessee. After that, he spent 4 years working as Director Food & Beverage at Holiday Inn, California.
The love of his country and of his parents saw him coming back and he joined Pearl Continental Lahore as Executive Assistant Manager. His expertise as a true hotel professional gained him the position of General Manager of PC Bhurban in 1992, which at that time was the new addition to the PC hotel chain. Bhurban became a landmark resort hotel under his tenure. In 1997 he was appointed as General Manager PC Karachi. In 1998, he moved to Lahore to take over the flagship property of Hashoo Group – PC Lahore - as the GM. In March 2001 he joined Four-Point Sheraton as Director Operation. The year 2003 saw him coming back to PC Karachi as its General Manager.
Currently, Irshad Anjum is serving the group as the Regional Vice President Operations (North) and heading the biggest hotel in Pakistan as its General Manager– the Pearl Continental Lahore since 2006.
A leader at work:
Irshad Anjum knows that art of getting the most out of his team. “ I always give free hand to my team”, My team is my key to success, he says with pride. He has excelled in his field, for he has mastered the gist of hotel management and that is ‘Customer Satisfaction’. Irshad Anjum spends most of his time on the floor and hotel lobby to meet customers, and to extract meaningful feedback from them. Irshad Anjum says that he hates firing people and instead gives them chances to cover up for their mistakes. His quality of work made him earn the prestigious ‘GM of the year award’ not once but twice. ‘Honor the customer’ is the guiding principle for Irshad Anjum.
The soft side:
His job is very demanding and he is not able to spare much time for his family, which he thinks is the irony of it. However, he appreciates his wife and mother who support him as his strong pillars. His son is doing his BBA (Hons) and plans to go abroad for further studies. He has high hopes with the youngsters around, and feels that they are more intelligent than people from his generation.
He loves to travel; Niagara Falls, Los Angeles, Sweden and Denmark being his favorite destinations. He likes music and listens to the songs of Lata and Nur Jehan. He likes reading books and has read biographies of leaders including Quaid e Azam and Benazir Bhutto.
A Patriot:
He returned to Pakistan in 1988 out of love for his homeland, and that love is still there – in fact it has strengthened itself into a commitment and resolve to serve Pakistan and to do it well. Irshad Anjum praises Quaid e Azam and then Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto as the two good leaders that we have been blessed with.
He says that although Pakistan is going through turmoil, but he is hopeful that the dark days would end and we will march forward into the light. He sees Pakistan as a great power within a time frame of ten years or so. He prioritizes Pakistan’s problems as worsening law and order, health and education. He also wants the communication network to get better and better, and that includes roads and bridges which would connect tourists to the untapped areas of the country.
Irshad B Anjum has come a long way and has progressed well; a success story indeed.
