Highlighting the importance of the corporate social responsibility, experts at a meeting organized by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) on Monday have called upon businesses to play a greater role in preventing conflicts and establishing peace within local communities.
The discussion took place at a consultative meeting titled “Peace through Profit: Peace-building through Corporate Social Responsibility in Pakistan” organized by the SDPI in partnership with the International Alert at a local hotel. The objective of the meeting was to discuss socio-economic issues contributing to conflicts and how various business practices and economic intervention could help in conflict resolution.
Speaking at the occasion, Sindh Minister for Youth Affairs Syed Faisal Sabzwari said that Pakistan’s massive charity and philanthropy system still lacked a proper structure and was not headed in a clear direction. “Although government does have a proper regulatory structure but it lags behind in proper implementation and effective governance,” he added.
The minister also lamented the fact that national and international help for conflict prevention in Pakistan had only been confined to the troubled northern region of the country, whereas other conflict-ridden areas such as Karachi had largely been ignored. He urged the participants to adopt need-based and community-driven conflict resolution measures.
Dr. Talat Wizarat from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) highlighted how modern business practices exploited the resources and created conflicts by alienating the local communities. She said that businesses could only flourish in peaceful societies, and thus, it was in the interest of businesses to ensure the existence of peaceful communities in their areas. She also went on to narrate a horrific incident which happened during the Zia regime when weapons distributed by the state to local businesses in Nooriabad in Karachi lead to communal conflicts in the area.

Karachi Port Trust Biography

Source (google.com.pk)
KARACHI: Star-studded National Bank overwhelmed Karachi Port Trust (KPT) 2-0 while international striker Mohammad Rasool’s solitary goal enabled Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) to produce their first win as they beat Navy 1-0 in the 9th Pakistan Premier Football League here at different venues on Friday.
At the KPT Stadium, National Bank, who had held KESC 1-1 in their opener the other day, showed guts on the soft, lush green pitch, beating KPT with an enviable ease to bag three points.
KPT, whose youngsters were mostly relying on speed, failed to put up the resistance they are famous for. Following a series of concerted efforts, the bankers got onto the scoresheet through international Faisal Iqbal who scored on rebound due to blunder from KPT keeper Shoaib who was playing in place of Sajid Hussain who had failed to impress the management in the first match against Navy the other day.
At half time, National Bank had 1-0 edge. After the breather, the bankers produced a few good chances but failed to convert them. Abdul Aziz, who was part of the 2006 Colombo South Asian Games gold medalist Pakistan team, enhanced his team’s lead in the 58th minute.
KPT’s frontline, carrying Mohammad bin Younis and skipper Zafar Majeed, failed to live up to the expectations. Zafar missed a couple of easy chances while tall and sturdy Mohammad also looked off-colour in the entire game.
KPT were reduced to 10 men when Zafar Majeed was sent off with a red card in the 70th minute.
National Bank coach Nasir Ismail was happy with the way his team played. “I think my team played really well,” Nasir told ‘The News’.
“We always miss a few chances and again our conversion rate was not that good but it was encouraging that the players made their hundred percent effort,” he said.
“Aziz has good coordination with Farooq Shah but as he was absent due to suspension, Aziz did not look that impressive and his shots went off the target,” said Nasir, also Pakistan’s assistant coach.
KPT coach Mohammad Asif said that his young team would raise their game. “You might have noticed that our players mostly depended on speed. We need play-makers who could manage the game. The midfield remained weak and there was a problem in ball holding. I hope that the team will soon raise their game as the league progresses,” Asif said.
Before the match, both teams observed a minute’s silence to pay tribute to former international footballer Abdul Ghafoor Majna who died on Friday.
At the People’s Sports Complex, KESC pulled off their maiden win with a lone goal from Chitral-born Mohammad Rasool who capitalised on a pass from skipper Mohammad Essa in the 29th minute.
In the fast-paced match Navy’s striker Sajjad Ahmad was shown red card four minutes from time. He will miss his team’s next show.
KESC manager Hasan Baloch said the team played well but could not convert more chances. “Although we won the match the frontline should have scored more goals,” he said. Navy coach Lt Commander Mehfooz conceded that it was not their day.
“It was not our day. I was expecting that we will win with three or four goals but I will tell you that the whole combination failed to click which was disappointing,” added Mehfooz.
At the Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad, defending champions KRL whipped debutants Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) 3-0 to take their points to six from two meetings. Mohammad Aadil struck twice in 41st and 90th minutes. Striker Mohammad Qasim had earlier put KRL 1-0 ahead in the 31st minute.
Nushki’s Baloch FC struck a late goal through Habibullah in the 89th minute to hold Chaman’s Muslim FC to a 1-1 draw at the Sadiq Shaheed Stadium in Quetta. Earlier, Zabihullah had slotted home in the 38th minute to put Muslim FC ahead. Today’s fixtures: Wohaib FC v WAPDA (UMT Ground, Lahore).

During study of the street children in Pakistan it was identified that healthcare and diseases are a big problem of street children. With support from corporate sector in Karachi and other private donors Azad Foundation started a mobile dispensary unit in 2001-2 to address this problem of street children in Karachi. It was very first project of Azad Foundation which marked a huge success and hundreds if not thousands of street children in Karachi benefited from this service.
DOST
In the year 2005, Azad Foundation and UNICEF got into partnership for provision of prevention and protection services through drop-in centers to the street children in Karachi. This is our longest running, still on-going and most sustainable project during which many successes were seen and new interventions were born out of it. The project completed its first tenure in first half of 2011 and was reinitiated in August 2011.
DEHLEEZ (Rehabilitation Center & Shelter)
In the year 2007, Azad Foundation in collaboration with City District Government of Karachi established a night shelter and rehabilitation center (DEHLEEZ) to support the street children of Karachi and Pakistan in final phase of their social rehabilitation and reintegration. DEHLEEZ can accommodate 50 children and after on-going work it will be able to support up-to 75 children.
Azad Foundation's initial research studies highlighted lack of shelter and safe spaces as a great protection concern of these children. Over the years as our rehabilitation and social reintegration strategy matured, the need for a transit care center was felt across the organizational components. As in the last phase of rehabilitation it is needed to separate them from the street life towards social reintegration. The idea of a specialized care facility to cater the needs and requirements of this transition was discussed at all levels of organization and materialized as Dehleez Transit Care Center for Street Children.
In year 2006, Azad Foundation approached City District Government of Karachi (CDGK) with a plan to collaboratively establish Dehleez. The purpose for engaging CDGK was three-fold. There was no legal framework present at the time which would provide a private organization the legal cover for providing shelter to children without parental supervision. Second aim was to build ownership of the government and thirdly to ensure sustainability of the initiative.
The proposal materialized in year 2007 when Azad Foundation signed an agreement with CDGK for the provision of land for DEHLEEZ and constructing a shelter home for street children in Karachi. Construction of DEHLEEZ concluded in the same year and it was inaugurated by CDGK Town Nazim on behalf of Mayor of Karachi.
DEHLEEZ has the capacity to accommodate 50 children at time. It provides street children in transition phase of rehabilitation and social reintegration the following services to support the process:
    Psychosocial Counseling
    Formal Education
    Life Skills
    Medical Care
    Meals
    Clothes
    Shelter/Residence
    Hygiene
    Vocational Training
    Job Placement
    Case Management
Highly professional and trained staff is appointed to ensure the best possible service provision and support to street children in DEHLEEZ. To make the case management process more efficient, Azad Foundation has introduced a comprehensive case management process in DEHLEEZ. At core of our case management process lies the case management committee comprising of a Psychologist, a Case Worker, a Medical Doctor, Counselor and Outreach Workers. This committee reviews each child's case on regular basis and develop plans for rehabilitation. All the documents and assessments are kept in safe custody and completely confidential. Any access to children's data is governed by Azad Foundation's Child Protection and IT Policies.
Sponsor A Child
DEHLEEZ is run largely on individual philanthropy and support from corporate sector. We accept in-kind and monitory donations to sponsor children during the rehabilitation process.
An individual can either sponsor a child throughout the year covering all needs or sponsor one aspect of child's transformation of life i.e. Health, Meals, Education, Sports and Clothing
For further information and guidelines on donations please download our 'Child Sponsorship Form' by clicking here.
IMPACT
Since its initiation, DEHLEEZ has been a very active component of Azad Foundation's Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration Programme for Street Children. Other than regular case in-takes it ran a project with UNODC Pakistan for Drug Rehabilitation of Street Children in years 2007-2009. Some statistical information is given below of DEHLEEZ work and results till date:
DOST (Girls)
Azad Foundation extended its radius of intervention by including street working girls in Pakistan into its ambit of work during implementation of the DOST project with UNICEF in 2009. Machar Colony and Shereen Jinnah Colony were identified through field research and a KABPS study as the pilot sample for future interventions. The project completed its first tenure in first half of 2011 and was reinitiated in August 2011.
Deep Sea Project
Deep Sea Project was initiated with the support of UNICEF as part of Day Care Center Proejct to explore the vulnerabilities of children working in deep sea and to design protective services and early warning system for vulnerable children which would deter a reasonable number of children becoming part of street life.
Drug Abuse Treatment & HIV/AIDs Prevention
This pilot project was initiated in 2007 to lower the susceptibility of street children to drug addiction and HIV/AIDS through improved effectiveness of public institutions and NGO delivery of services in collaboration with UNODC Pakistan.
DASTAK
Rehabilitation Center Dastak was established in 2004 with the support of private sector in Karachi and later European Commission, Group Development, France, ECPAT International and Foreign Ministry of Luxemberg supported it. It was designed to help street children both boys (street living) and working girls to develop a better, healthy, happy life; safety from all types of exploitation at intrapersonal and interpersonal level.
